Conservatives standing up to Liberals’ unprecedented attacks on freedom of speech

Ottawa, ON – Rachael Harder, Conservative Shadow Minister for Digital Government, and Alain Rayes, Conservative Shadow Minister for Canadian Heritage, issued the following statement after the Liberals and the Bloc Québécois shamefully colluded to try to ram Bill C-10 through Parliament, which aims to regulate the social media content of everyday Canadians: “Weeks ago, the Trudeau Liberals withdrew the section of their own bill that protects individual users’ content, making Canadians subject to broad and vague government powers to regulate their use of the internet, including on apps and social media platforms like YouTube and Facebook. Since then, Conservatives have fought daily to protect the freedom of speech of Canadians against attacks by the Liberals. “We have been hearing from experts and Canadians from all walks of life who are worried about the Liberals’ plan to restrict freedom of speech by regulating the internet. But now, they are taking it even further. Today, the Liberals are trying to shut down debate on Bill C-10 at committee stage, ramming the bill through Parliament. This extreme tactic has only been used three times in history – with no government having used this tactic for over 20 years. “Shutting down debate on a bill widely condemned for its attacks on freedom of speech sets a very dangerous precedent. If this controversial bill is rammed through without sufficient debate, a Conservative government will stand up for Canadians and repeal this deeply flawed legislation. Only Canada’s Conservatives will keep on fighting for the freedoms of Canadians.”

Conservatives call on the Trudeau government to invoke pipeline treaty to save Line 5

Ottawa, ON – Greg McLean, Conservative Shadow Minister for Natural Resources, and the Hon. Michael Chong, Conservative Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs, and Gérard Deltell, House Leader of the Official Opposition, released the following statement on Enbridge Line 5: “Canadian energy security is at risk. “The governor of Michigan is trying to shut down Enbridge Line 5, regardless of the outcome of mediation and the court process, in a blatant violation of the Transit Pipelines Treaty that President Joe Biden supported as a senator. “If Line 5 is shut down, 30,000 jobs are in jeopardy across Ontario and Quebec, including 5,000 jobs in Sarnia. “Enbridge Line 5 carries Canadian oil east, providing around half of the crude oil needs of Ontario and Quebec. There is no alternative – if Line 5 stops flowing there will be immediate fuel shortages across Ontario and Quebec, increased fuel prices, and increased truck and rail transportation of oil with the attendant environmental risks and increased GHG emissions. “Enbridge intends to continue legal operation of Line 5, as approved by the US federal regulator and consistent with the treaty, pending a US court ruling. “The clock runs out tomorrow. Conservatives urgently call on Prime Minister Trudeau to call President Biden and invoke the 1977 Transit Pipelines Treaty to ensure this vital infrastructure link remains open. Canadians can’t afford another pipeline failure under this Liberal government.”

Erin O’Toole calls on Trudeau to vaccinate Canadians by May long weekend

Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Erin O’Toole, Leader of Canada’s Conservatives and the Official Opposition, issued the following statement on the Conservative Opposition Day motion calling on Justin Trudeau to ensure Canadians have vaccines by the May long weekend: “Today, Canada’s Conservatives are calling on the Trudeau government to ensure every Canadian adult has access to a vaccine by the May long weekend. There also needs to be a consistent and reliable testing system from coast-to-coast. “Justin Trudeau’s failure to secure sufficient vaccine supply led the government to ignore the direction of the vaccine manufacturers by ordering a four-month wait between doses, longer than any other country in the world. “Canada also has no national system of screening and rapid testing that is critical for a safe reopening. This is perhaps Justin Trudeau’s greatest failure. “According to modelling released by the federal government, Canadians cannot expect to begin to reopen until at least 20 per cent of Canadians are fully vaccinated, and 75 per cent have received at least one dose. “The current supply of vaccines we are receiving are insufficient to reach this goal before many provinces are scheduled to begin lifting their restrictions. “Canadians are frustrated. They want to get back to work, school, and see their loved ones again – and they want to know they are safe while doing so. We need vaccines to make that happen.”

Secure Canada’s borders

Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Erin O’Toole, Leader of Canada’s Conservatives and the Official Opposition, issued the following statement calling on Justin Trudeau to take action and secure Canada’s borders: “Throughout April, dozens of COVID-positive flights have been landing in Canada. With them, they have brought the risk of new variants, including the double mutated variant that is currently overwhelming India’s healthcare system. “As soon as COVID-19 began to spread, Conservatives called on the Liberals to take action to secure the border and prevent the spread of the virus in Canada. “Justin Trudeau has done next to nothing to keep dangerous variants from Brazil, South Africa, and the United Kingdom out of Canada.  “We now see daily case counts for each variant on the rise, and shifts in how the virus is impacting Canadians, like more young people getting very sick as a result.“Canadians are being told not to go to work. Not to send their children to school. But hundreds of international flights continue to land in Canada each week. “We have a small window of opportunity to act, and we must move now. Canada’s Conservatives are calling on Justin Trudeau to secure Canada’s borders, and temporarily suspend flights from hot spot countries immediately. “Canadians deserve to know where COVID-19 is spreading, how emerging variants are changing transmission, and what vaccination levels are, both here and abroad.  “This temporary suspension will allow Canada to develop a clear set of parameters to identify the risks of emerging variants and share this information clearly with Canadians.”

Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole on Justin Trudeau’s budget

Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Erin O’Toole, Leader of Canada’s Conservatives and the Official Opposition, issued the following statement ahead of Justin Trudeau’s 2021 federal budget: “Across the country, Canadians were looking forward to beginning to re-open and to round the corner on COVID-19. But now, we find ourselves in Justin Trudeau’s third wave.  “The Prime Minister has moved too slow for this virus – it is racing ahead of us now. Our healthcare workers, our heroes on the frontlines, are breaking their backs because we don’t have adequate vaccine supply. “For months, as provinces pleaded for more vaccines, the Liberals have been plotting an election. When Justin Trudeau tables his budget this afternoon, Canadians can expect the Liberal government to incur massive new financial commitments that he expects future generations to pay for.  “Justin Trudeau’s ‘reimagined’ economy is a risky ‘Ottawa-knows-best’ approach that picks winners and losers by deciding which jobs, sectors, and regions of our country will be prosperous. This unproven and incompetent economic approach threatens the personal financial security of Canadians. “In contrast, Canada’s Conservatives support Canada’s Recovery Plan that secures your personal finances by recovering millions of jobs that have been lost and taking immediate action on the hardest hit sectors, helping those who have suffered the most, including women and young people. “We will secure the economic future of Canada by creating new opportunities, more jobs, higher wages, and lower taxes.”

Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole announces climate change plan

Ottawa, ON – Today, the Hon. Erin O’Toole, Leader of Canada’s Conservatives and the Official Opposition, unveiled the Conservative climate change plan. Recognizing the important role Canada has in combatting climate change, the comprehensive plan will achieve substantially the same emissions reductions by 2030 as the government's current plan, while creating jobs and growing the economy."Our plan takes swift action on climate change," said O'Toole. "Our plan trusts Canadian families to be part of the climate change plan. When compared to the Trudeau Carbon Tax, our plan is just as effective in emission reduction but vastly superior in preserving jobs and growing the Canadian economy."The plan includes scrapping the federal carbon tax and working with the provinces to implement an innovative, national Personal Low Carbon Savings Account. This will maintain a price on carbon, without one penny going to the government, recognizing that Canadians are the ones who should be choosing the best way for them to live a greener lifestyle. The plan includes several other measures, including: Requiring automakers to sell more zero emission vehicles; Lowering industrial emissions; Increasing use of renewable natural gas; and Implementing a low carbon fuel standard. Independent analysis, conducted by Navius Research, found that the plan would be expected to achieve substantially the same emissions reductions as the government’s current plan in 2030, while resulting in a boost to jobs and the economy.“We will fight climate change and protect the environment, but we won’t do it on the backs of hardworking Canadians,” said O’Toole. Details on the Conservative plan to combat climate change can be found here.

Statement from Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole on Justin Trudeau’s vaccine failure

Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Erin O’Toole, Leader of Canada’s Conservatives and the Official Opposition, issued the following statement: “Canadians are having a very difficult time coping with the current spike in COVID-19 cases and accompanying lockdowns. Hospitalizations and ICU admissions are soaring. Business are closed, and workers are losing their jobs or having their hours cut.  “The mental health crisis our communities have been struggling with across Canada has deepened, and Canadian families are worried about their children. “This is what Justin Trudeau’s vaccine failure looks like. It has had real consequences for Canadians.  “In the United States, cases and hospitalizations are dropping. Business are opening, restaurant patios are busy, and fans are returning to watch in-person NHL, NBA, and MLB games. This is happening because the US population is vaccinated.“Our current situation in Canada was avoidable. This is Justin Trudeau’s third wave. “Today I will be meeting with the Prime Minister, and while he has rejected our suggestions in the past, I am hopeful he will be more willing to listen this time, especially given the seriousness of the situation we are in and the failure of his current approach. “As Parliament returns for five weeks ahead of the summer, Conservatives will demonstrate that our Canada Recovery Plan will be the first step towards securing the future for all Canadians.”

Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole pledges pandemic response public inquiry

Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Erin O’Toole, Leader of Canada’s Conservatives and the Official Opposition, issued the following statement: “Last spring, when it was clear that vaccines would be the key tool to turn the page in the crisis, Justin Trudeau dropped the ball completely. “He turned to China, of all countries, to partner with on the making of a vaccine. It was the worst in a series of bad decisions and it is why we are lagging the developed world today. “We’re still scrambling to catch up. It’s a national disgrace, especially in a country as strong and prosperous as Canada. “It all belongs to the past. What matters is the future. What matters is that this never, ever happens again. “Last month, Canada marked a National Day of Observance for those lost to this pandemic, but to truly honour their memory, we must pledge to learn from the mistakes made and improve our resilience and readiness as a country. “Our attention should be on getting the country back on its feet. “But when the pandemic is over, we need answers, we need to know what worked and what didn’t. We need complete transparency and accountability. “A Conservative government will call a public inquiry to examine every aspect of the government’s pandemic response. We also call on the government to appoint a special monitor from the Office of the Auditor General to track the pandemic response in real time to ensure that valuable ‘lessons learned’ are captured for future emergency readiness. “The inquiry will ensure that all lessons learned from the crisis are publicly aired and learnings can immediately be adopted. Canada must be better prepared for future threats. We cannot afford to once again fail to keep Canadians safe. “To secure the future, we must learn from the past.”

Conservative statement on Liberal Carbon Tax Supreme Court ruling

Ottawa, ON – The Hon. Erin O’Toole, Leader of Canada’s Conservatives and the Official Opposition, issued the following statement on the Supreme Court of Canada’s ruling on the Liberal Carbon Tax: “Canada’s Conservatives will repeal Justin Trudeau’s Carbon Tax. We will protect the environment and fight the reality of climate change, but we won't do it by making the poorest pay more. “The Supreme Court recognized that policies related to emission reduction touch on federal and provincial jurisdiction. Conservatives prefer a collaborative approach to tackling climate change to make progress while also helping maintain a strong economy. “After promising not to, Justin Trudeau tripled the Carbon Tax, jeopardizing hundreds of thousands of jobs. Under Trudeau, Canada’s unemployment rate is among the highest in the G-7 and we are experiencing the worst economic growth since the great depression. It’s impossible to understand why Trudeau would choose now, of all times, to put Canadians out of work. “The Supreme Court highlighted the risk of carbon leakage between provinces. The same risk of leakage of jobs and investment exists between Canada and the United States. “Canada’s Conservatives will put forward a clear and comprehensive climate plan focused on reducing emissions, but we won’t do it on the backs of the poorest and working Canadians. “Our relentless focus will remain on securing jobs, securing the economy, and securing our future.”

Conservative statement on International Women’s Day

Ottawa, ON – Jag Sahota, Conservative Shadow Minister for Women and Gender Equality, released the following statement in recognition of International Women’s Day: “Today we celebrate International Women’s Day. First celebrated in 1911, International Women’s Day is an opportunity for us to not only reflect on the achievements that the women before us have accomplished in the fight for gender equality, but also on the work that remains for our generation.“As a woman, I am eternally grateful for their dedication and advocacy, but as I said in the House of Commons, I am looking forward to future generations looking back and being proud of our accomplishments and being able to build upon them. The work to build an equal Canada is never really complete.“As a female MP in the Conservative Party of Canada, I am proud of our continued advocacy and our long history of supporting women across our country. Not only was it under a Conservative government that a woman’s right to vote was recognized, but women play a vital and leading role in our Party today.“Unfortunately, I am very disheartened by the lack of action we are seeing from this Liberal government.“In 2019, the Liberals promised Canadian women a National Action Plan to combat gender-based violence, but we have no plan. This broken promise is disheartening, especially at a time when women are disproportionately disadvantaged by the pandemic. Actions speak louder than words, and women and girls across Canada need a government that will support them.“On International Women’s Day, and every day, Canada’s Conservatives will continue to call on the Liberal government to take real, meaningful action to support women across Canada as we focus on securing our future.”
